چکیده

3D visualization and virtual reality are increasingly important in geographic information science and play a wide role in applications of geographic information technology to the public including managers, policy analysts, geography teachers, children and many other niche groups . Up to now, Google Earth has been downloaded about 200 million times, and has widely been used in daily life by hundreds of thousands of people . On the other hand, in view of the requirements of geocollaboration by group of users dealing with complicated geo-problems such as geographic planning of regional sustainable development, impacts of global environment change, and emergency response, more and more effort is being placed on collaborative visualization and collaborative GIS . By considering the integration of network-based 3D geo-visualization like Google Earth in the context of collaborative visualization, what are the forms of such new systems? In order to deal with open, large, and very complex interacting computer and human systems, Qian and Dai [11] put forward the concept of a workshop hall for metasynthetic engineering which would integrate human group intelligence and networked computing power. Based on the concept of virtual geographic environments (VGE) [3,12] and the workshop hall metasynthetic engineering, and incorporating geocollaboration and distributed virtual environment technologies, this chapter addresses the basic conceptual framework for a networked collaborative VGE (CVGE), as well as developing a prototype which illustrates the form and basic functions of the CVGE.

Design and Development

A collaborative virtual geographic environment (CVGE) is a 3-D, distributed, and graphical world representing and simulating geographic phenomena and processes to enable geographically distributed users to explore geoproblems and theories and generate hypotheses, and to support geomodel building and validation and collaborative ecological planning. This chapter reports an approach to establishi...

Chapter 4 COLLABORATIVE VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS FOR SCIENTIFIC COLLABORATION: TECHNICAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL DESIGN FRAMEWORKS

Collaboration among scientists is human behavior that facilitates the sharing of meaning and completion of tasks with respect to a mutually shared scientific goal, and which takes place in social settings. Scientific collaboration across geographic distances began centuries ago, when scientists began utilizing postal and shipping services to exchange ideas as well as samples of plants and anima...

Exploitation of Croquet CVE Platform for supporting Collaborative e-Learning Environments

This paper reviews the features of five 3 dimensional networked virtual environments which support collaborative learning applications, through the comparison of the tools and services they offer. Following that, we justify our choice of platform, which is the Croquet platform, and discuss design and implementation issues. Finally we present the results of the evaluation process of the virtual ...

Networked Virtual Environments for Collaborative Learning

In this invited talk, I examine how the technologies of networking and desktop virtual reality can be used to enhance the quality of student learning. I use the C–VISions (Collaborative Virtual Interactive Simulations) system, developed at the National University of Singapore, as an exemplar system to help the audience appreciate the unique advantages that the technology affords for student lea...
